Tadalafil is an active pharmaceutical ingredient contained in erectile dysfunction treatment pills Cialis. Tadalafil formula was developed by researchers at pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.
The company patented a formula of Tadalafil in most countries. In 2014, the exclusive patent for Tadalafil in Europe expired, and also patent protection for this active ingredient to be expired at the end of 2017 in USA.
Tadalafil was first presented as a drug to treat erectile dysfunction in 2002. In 2003, Tadalafil was released in the USA and in over 100 countries around the world. About 15 years ago, Eli Lilly launched sale of Tadalafil under the brand name of Cialis. Today, Cialis is one of the key brands of Eli Lilly.
Tadalafil helps to successfully treat ED by activation of biochemical reactions that restore the erection mechanism. Tadalafil provides:
- Active inhibition of PDE-5 enzyme.
- Increase in cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
- Relaxation of smooth muscles and expansion of small and large vessels.
- Improvement of blood supply in the penile cavernous tissues.
As a result of these biochemical reactions, an erection is achieved and maintained sufficiently for successful sexual intercourse. It should be noted that while taking Tadalafil, erection comes only in response to being sexually stimulated.
Comparing to other PDE5 inhibitors, Tadalafil has several advantages. In contrast to other erectile dysfunction treatment medications acting for 4-6 hours, Tadalafil works for 36 hours after oral administration.
In addition, clinical studies have shown that Tadalafil increases ability to spontaneous sexual activity in men with organic, psychogenic or mixed ED.
Another important advantage is that minimum daily Tadalafil doses of 5mg or 2.5mg help a man to achieve an erection at any time.
It should be noted that Tadalafil is indicated not only to treat erection problems. Regular low Tadalafil doses of 5mg improve blood circulation in the pelvis, so relieving symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). If a man with ED is diagnosed with BPH, a daily dose of Tadalafil 5 mg can be used for treatment of both diseases.
High Tadalafil doses of 40mg affect pulmonary hemodynamics, and therefore can be used for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Tablets containing a high Tadalafil dose of 40mg are available at pharmacies under the brand name of Adcirca.
